Description
This black and white art piece by Robert WK Clark presents the viewer with the image of two unclothed women, twined about each other. The axis of the image is vertical, with one of the women standing upright and the other resting on her shoulders and arm, with her legs up in the air. Their arms wrap around each other's bodies, as do one each of their legs. One model has dark hair, the other is blonde. There is no background at all, just a black field.
The lack of background indicates that the artist intends that the women themselves and their relationship to each other is the sole focus on the work. The plethora of dualities found in the piece give a strong indication of just what that focus is supposed to convey. One woman is upright, the other inverted. One is dark-haired, the other light-haired. One is tattooed, the other is not. One turns her face towards her partner, the other turns her face away. Taken as a whole, the piece presents an even stronger duality. The women look like they are lovers, lying in bed locked in a sensual embrace. They also look like they are standing upright, in a very active pose. The whole structure of this work is designed to showcase a duality of activity versus lassitude.
This all-pervasive theme of duality cannot have been an accident. These two women, so similar yet so different, seem to form a sensual yin-yang symbol. The way their bodies are entwined certainly calls to mind the way the waves of the yin and yang shapes entwine with each other. This evocation of an ancient Chinese religious symbol adds a deeper, or perhaps higher, level of interpretation to the work. The yin-yang symbol is generally associated with balance, asceticism, a turning the back upon worldly pleasures and temptations. By creating such a symbol out of such a sensual, even sexual, image the artist makes something spiritual, even holy, out of the women's coupling. More than this, the artist reminds the viewer that holiness, and wholeness, have a sensual component that in no way diminishes them. This work serves to function as a commentary and lesson on both the world of the flesh and the nature of the spirit at the same time.
