The first person that immediately comes to mind when I see this image is Marilyn Monroe. The hair, the complexion, the full lips and the introspective quality spoken to by the title of the piece, I feel, make this easy to relate to Marilyn. The pearls make us think of someone who is put together, with class, but the posture and the pose with the mirror really give that sense of struggling to find one’s true self. The visual movement is great within this piece. You enter through the figure’s eye on the left side of the image, and the highlights over the hair, arms and pearls trail you along through nice visual spaces full of dimension created by the dark shadows of the background.
