This photograph shares so many lovely qualities with those of Baroque paintings, the lace is where I see this particularly. The movement created by the lace throughout the piece is breathtaking. The black lace against the stark white background had a very brushy quality and texture, like ink and brush paintings. And when you get to the center of all this brushy lace movement, you are rewarded with this chromatically warm and bright center with the face and the pops of color in the make up. It’s interesting that it’s called Mannequins Look; I feel like the face is so juicy and supple and full of life, almost in contrast to the black lace which for me has connotations with death and lifelessness, it reminds me of Tim Burton’s The Corpse Bride, dead but vivacious.
